Another fun week-end?
I have often wondered how a place as beautiful as the Yukon has such a small population. Good news, I've cracked the code! The reason there isn't more people in the Yukon is...the Yukon is filled with a bunch of sado masochists. How can we expect people to want to move to this Territory when we have the most warped idea of fun on the planet? The proof is in our ridiculously hectic summer schedule, every week-end there is another fun summer activity that is sure to tickle your fancy. First there's the Kluane-Chilkat Bicycle relay, what's more fun than climbing up a mountain pass through blistering headwinds? If that's not amusing enough for you, try out the 24 Hours of Light mountain bike relay. Racing your bike at 2 in the morning is a terrific way to spend a Saturday night. For those who are looking for that utopic epitome of sheer exuberance try out the Yukon River Quest. Can you think of anything more pleasurable than sitting in a canoe/kayak for two straight days paddling through freezing rain and nasty Labarge waves?....I can't. This week-end I had the "pleasure" of participating in yet another wonderful Yukon stalwart- the Skagway Road Relay. It's a prime example of northern fun- running 175 km from Skagway, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon. I was lucky to get one of the really fabulous legs...running a half marathon from 11:00 pm - 1:30 am. In Yukon standards, that pretty much amounts to a chocolate sundae with a cherry on top. This summer of fun is just about killing me. I can't wait until the winter, when all I have to do is lie in front of the wood stove trying to keep warm...unless of course I decide to have a crazy good time running the Yukon Quest, all I need is another 13 dogs and a sled...
Don't I look like I'm having fun?
